On March 9th every year, Romania commemorates the Day of Anti-Communist Political Prisoners, reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of those who resisted communist oppression between 1944 and 1989. This year, Cluj-Napoca joined the nation in honouring this significant day with solemn events organized on March 8th, 2024.
Remembering the Sacrifice
At the Monument of Anti-Communist Resistance in Cluj-Napoca, situated at the entrance of Central Park “Simion Bărnuțiu,” a religious service was held, and wreaths were laid in remembrance. The event was attended by local authorities, community members, and descendants of political prisoners, all paying homage to those who fought for freedom and justice.
Irina Munteanu, the prefect of Cluj County, aptly summarized the significance of the occasion, stating, “With respect and gratitude, we remember today the courage and sacrifice of anti-communist political prisoners. Their struggle for freedom and justice remains a symbol of resistance against oppression and a testament to the unbroken spirit of humanity. Let us honour their memory and commit to keeping the flame of freedom alive for which they fought so vigorously.”
Legal Recognition
The importance of this day is not only commemorated through ceremonies but also legally recognized. The Romanian Parliament, with overwhelming support, adopted a law on November 22, 2011, declaring March 9th as the official Day of Anti-Communist Political Prisoners. This legislative initiative, championed by Senator Puiu Haşotti, received the bipartisan endorsement, symbolizing the nation’s acknowledgement of its tumultuous past and commitment to democracy.
